Keeping iTunes in sync

With many machines in the home and one main machine that acts as the primary music oracle I have managed to keep every machine in the house in sync with my iTunes music, Windows or Mac. To do this efficiently you will need some kung-fu knowledge in Mac OS X's Automator application and have iCal ready to accept a new calendar entry to execute this job every night. Because my main music source is also a laptop, it tends to disappear from the home from 10am to around 3pm or it may just be booted into Windows for some gaming. This will mean that a mirror of the music will need to be stored on a machine that is always on, such as NAS or just a standard desktop. This article assumes you have already set up a network share capable of holding this content.

Taking Safari 4 that next step forward

The latest Safari release, Safari 4, is an amazing new update to the already powerful and stylish web browser for the Mac (and now PC). Apple has really put a lot more effort into both the UI and the engine of the web browser, but being a Firefox using from a while back you may be left wanting more. While I have successfully made the transition from Firefox to Safari (and have been using it ever since I purchased my first MacBook in mid-2007) others are left wanting more Safari.

I have found one useful and donation supported plugin for Safari, called Glims for Safari which is made by Machangout. Glims adds subtle but useful features to your already existent Safari installation with the following stand out features

  • Improved web search, which will actually list web pages directly in the search area on the browser
  • Full screen web browsing
  • Automatically adds web page thumbnails to Google and Yahoo! searches
  • Force new windows to open in tabs
  • Integrates favicons into the tabs
  • Navigation through tabs via keyboard
  • Auto hid the downloads window

I have tried others like Saftbut this seems to be a necessary addition to any Mac running Safari 4.
